Dear QM Jane and Red Hat Sisters,
Eight Gadabouts ( Trish, Beth, Jane,
Carol, Sherrie, Barbara, Nancy and
Jenene) and one Gadabout "Lady in
Waiting" ( Nancy Collins) traveled to
Metamora, Indiana, to enjoy the 1838
canal town with 100 other "Hatters" from
Ohio and Indiana at the 4th annual Red
Hat Days.
What a good time we had and what a
delightful Bed and Breakfast we roomed
in! We enjoyed a delicious and
inexpensive dinner specially prepared by
our B & B owners for only $8 and after
dinner they gave us the use of the
dining room to play games and watch
TV. Needless to say a game of Left,
Right, Center broke out and many dimes
were won and lost. Before the
innkeepers retired for the evening, they
gave us run of the kitchen and told us to
help ourselves to beverages and
left-over pies and cobbler (Yummy), so
none of us lost weight last weekend,
that's for sure!!
Saturday started out a bit rainy and we
were a little worried that the event might
get rained out, but by 9:30 AM ( after
enjoying a delicious breakfast) the rain
had stopped and the sun was shining.
The event started with an opening
ceremony and Queen recognition, then a
raffle ( every lady in attendance won
something). It continued with the Most
Creative Hat contest. Our Lady in
Waiting, Nancy placed with a stunning
creation of a Red Top Hat sporting a
corkscrew topped with a beautiful
butterfly. QM Jane was a contestant in
the Picture Perfect Ensemble contest. (
The winner was a 96 year old flapper in
4 " heels - OUCH!! I guess she
deserved it just for walking around in
those!). Trish placed for the Best Red
Hat Contest. She modeled her beautiful
hat she purchased several years ago in
St. Louis.
After the opening ceremony was over we
all enjoyed the many, many shops and
had fun on the scavenger hunt in which
we had to get nine merchants to sign a
sheet and then we earned a free ice
cream cone ( I don't think any of us left
empty handed ). Those of us that took
the canal boat ride really enjoyed the
cool breeze and the very informative talk
the guide gave.
It is a wonderful place to visit, so if you
get a chance to travel the 2.5 hours to
Metamora, Indiana, do so.
Lady of the Garter
Beth
